New look Thursdays - come along and give it a try

Because Club members expressed the desire to be 'whipped into shape'
and it was thought that having some qualified coaching people might be the answer, Kirsty and Rita attended a UK Athletics course back in August and are now qualified to lead running groups. We are planning a programme of speed work sessions - some of which we will be doing on the grass at the back of Willowbrook (next to the football pitch and under the floodlights) some around and about the pathways. So, if YOU want to be 'whipped into shape' and even have some fun, why not come along at 7pm on Thursday evenings and join in our speedwork sessions! All levels of ability catered for and welcomed!

Rita's review of the Great South Run

My fifth Great South Run and—for once—the sun shone although it was very windy! Having had a bad back for a couple of months and not having done much training I knew it wouldn’t be easy this time around so went to Portsmouth with much trepidation and lots of painkillers! Incredibly I had an enjoyable run in spite of a personal worst time of 1hr 51mins and was cheered on by my daughter halfway round and at the end!

The Great South is one of my favourite road races and quite scenic—starting on the seafront at Southsea Common and going through the Historic Dockyard passing HMS Warrior and the Victory, through part of the city past the Guildhall and other landmarks, before heading back round to Southsea with the last two miles going straight alongside the Solent to Clarence Pier and the finish. Was pleased to hear afterwards that even the elite runners had complained about the strong headwinds during the last two miles to the finish—nice to know it wasn’t only me who found the last bit hard!

As you would expect for a Great Run event, the organisation is superb and the atmosphere is great—loads of support all the way round and lots of loud music and live bands to jolly everyone along from rock groups, highland pipers, drumming bands and radio announcers telling you ‘you are nearly there’—even when you’re not!

Entries are now open for the Great South Run 2010 (www.greatrun.org) if anyone fancies joining me next time!
